White Sage

Latin name: Salvia apiana

What is White Sage?
Native Americans have several uses for white sage. The leaves were used for flavoring in cooking and were also eaten, smoked, or used in a sweathouse as a remedy for colds. Seeds were put into the eye and rolled under the eyelids to cleanse the eyes. The leaves were crushed and mixed with water, creating a hair shampoo, dye, and straightener.

What are the health benefits of White Sage?
White sage is an anti-inflammatory. It can be made into a tea by steeping the leaves in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. White sage tea decreases sweating, salivation, and mucous secretions in the sinuses, throat and lungs. Drinking the tea cool can be a good stomach tonic, while a lukewarm tea is good for treating sore throats. The leaves can also be used to stop bleeding from heavy menstruation.

Are there any precautions for taking White Sage?
Because it can decrease lactation, nursing mothers are advised to avoid taking white sage.

Where can I find White Sage?
White sage can be found in some grocery stores, health food or vitamin stores, online, and at the offices of Chinese medical practitioners. Sometimes it is available fresh at outdoor markets.
