What are Cassia Seeds?

Cassia seeds come from the cassia, an annual plant that grows in tropical zones. Cassia seeds range in color from greenish brown to dark brown and yellowish red, with a smooth glossy surface. Since ancient times the Chinese have taken cassia seed as a daily tea to help promote clear vision.

What are the health benefits of Cassia Seeds?
Cassia seeds are used in traditional Chinese medicine to benefit vision, reduce hypertension, and relieve constipation. The seeds are used to relieve itchy, red eyes in a patient that is suffering from cold and flu symptoms. They are also used to treat red, painful eyes that are sensitive to light, excessively tearing up, and causing a headache.

What are the guidelines for taking Cassia Seeds?
Cassia seeds are usually combined with other herbs in a prescribed formula. They may be taken on their own, usually as a laxative for constipation. Put 15 to 20 grams of the seeds in 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Let cool and drink the tea. Slightly toasted cassia seeds can be boiled for 15 minutes into an everyday drink, similar to barley tea.

Are there any precautions for taking Cassia Seeds?

Those with low blood pressure or diarrhea should not take cassia seeds. Also, because it can contract the uterus, cassia seed should not be taken by young or pregnant women. As with all herbs, it is best to work with a licensed practitioner or physician.
