Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
My teenage brother has cancer and though he has already had several tumors removed, it is likely that more are on the way. Is there anything he can do to help alleviate the symptoms and slow process of the disease?
A: Nutrition, exercise and a positive spirit filled with wonder, laughter and hope are important tools to keep us all healthy and energized. Adequate rest and a regular routine of eating and sleeping at the same times each day is important. Reducing stress is of the utmost importance. I recommend that your brother try to walk briskly for 20 – 30 minutes every day. Qigong exercises can also be very helpful.
To slow the growth of tumors, I suggest a vegetarian diet without dairy. It is important that your brother remains under the care of his primary physicians. That said, he can have a discussion with them about the possibility of adjunctive treatments. If his primary physicians grant approval, I suggest your brother visit with a licensed practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) who can develop a custom herbal formula, exercise plan, and diet for him.
To look for a licensed TCM practitioner in your area go on www.acupuncture.com “Find an Acupuncturist”. If you happen to be in the Los Angeles area, go to www.taoofwellness.com for a consultation and treatment or www.yosan.edu for low cost TCM care.
He may also find the Tao of Wellness herbal formula “Cancer Support” to he helpful; it is designed specifically to reinvigorate the immune system of cancer patients. Of course, discuss with a physician before beginning any new health regime.
