What causes puffiness under the eyes?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
I have, for many years, had puffiness under my eyes that hang like pillows. What is the cause of this puffiness and how can I get rid of it?

A: Barring a congenital muscle weakness of that region, puffy swelling of the eyes, the lower lids and the upper cheek, especially if lacking in specific color and pain, are due to digestive weakness. In traditional Chinese medicine, this is known as Yang energy weakness.

There can be many etiologies for this condition, especially since you are describing a chronic condition; most likely it is a long-standing deficiency of the digestive Yang energy. I would suggest you consult a licensed practitioner to conduct proper diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment.

I recommend that you also try the Traditions of Tao herbal formulas “Yang Exhaustion” and “Abundant Energy”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
