Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
Do you have any guidelines for treating incontinence?
A: In general, for incontinence, follow these guidelines:
1. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, coffee, chocolate, refined or processed foods, and simple sugars. Chemicals in food, drugs, and impure water have an adverse effect on the bladder.
2. Avoid certain foods such as asparagus, radishes and cabbage, which irritate the bladder and worsen the odor associated with incontinence.
3. Drink often, but not much at a time (to avoid overloading the bladder).
4. Do pelvic exercises such as Kegel exercises. Daily exercises can strengthen the pelvic muscles and improve bladder control.
