Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
What do you know about L-lysine for oral herpes?
A: A well-known treatment for herpes involves the amino acid L-lysine. Although study results have been somewhat contradictory, overall the evidence suggests that taking L-lysine on a regular basis might make herpes flare-ups milder and less frequent. L-lysine probably works best when it is combined with dietary changes that restrict levels of another amino acid, arginine. (To do this, cut down on gelatin, chocolate, peanuts, almonds and other nuts, seeds, and to a lesser extent wheat.)
Foods high in L-lysine include vegetables, beans, fish, turkey, and chicken.
