How to cure a nervous tic?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
My nephew has a nervous tic (twitching of facial muscles). Is there any cure for this with traditional Chinese medicine?

A: There can be many etiologies for this condition. I would suggest you first consult with a physician to make sure there are no serious neurological problems. Symptoms like these can also be result of anxiety or some emotional distress and can also be invasion of “wind” in the facial meridians.

Consult a licensed acupuncturist in your area to determine proper course of action. Acupuncture and meditation exercises can help.

Also, if anxiety is the root cause of the problem, you might wish to try the Traditions of Tao herbal formulas “Calm-fort/Sleeping”, “Anxiety/Sleepless”, and the “Five Elements of Health”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
