Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
How do our emotions impact our longevity?
A: The Greek word for emotions is pathos. The English variation of this word has become the well-known word pathology. It is therefore easy to understand the link between emotions and states of pathology or disease. Even the word “dis-ease” explains an interesting state, one in which the body is not easy, not in harmony, and not in a state of peace. Emotions are as real as any physical object. They have energetic and material properties that can be manifested in and out of the body.
When experienced properly, our emotions, both good and bad, are a normal state of life and can be a good source of learning, as well as an impetus for positive constructive action.
However, most of us, through inexperience and lack of cultivation, do not possess the necessary tools to deal with excess emotions. We either suppress these emotions or release them outright with no regard to their consequences; in either case, these mechanisms have adverse effects on our health and longevity. For example, the emotion of anger, if suppressed, will adversely affect our liver’s ability to maintain proper enzymatic functions and assist in metabolism. On the other hand, if anger is expressed uncontrollably, it affects our neurological systems and can cause adverse cerebrovascular conditions, such as strokes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular pathologies.
Through continued cultivation of the mind and spirit with such activities as meditation, and energy exercises, we can learn to understand emotions and see them as tangible physical objects. This will then allow us to observe the origins, birth, and passing of these emotions without becoming too attached to them; emotions should be experienced as an unattached bystander observing.
