Acupuncture help child with sensory integration disorder?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
My son is not yet one year old and has been diagnosed with sensory integration disorder (SID). Can acupuncture help?

A: I am surprised that the diagnosis of SID is made with such a young child. Therefore, I am going to assume that there are serious and outward manifestations of the associated symptoms. The condition, unless severe, can be managed with proper therapy and treatments. Your child is too young for acupuncture treatments, but a licensed practitioner will be able to employ other methods as an effective treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatments may have to be life long—but it is too early to tell. I suggest you keep a positive outlook, and keep the child well nourished and happy.
