Acupuncture for sudden sensorineural hearing loss?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
My friend, age 40, was recently developed sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) in his left ear. When it was first diagnosed, he was put on a heavy dose of steroids, which did nothing. I am wondering if acupuncture is his best course of action?

A: In traditional Chinese medicine theory, sudden hearing loss is associated with “wind” which strikes the meridians associated with the face and hearing. There are treatment protocols offered by acupuncture that might help. I suggest that you contact a licensed practitioner in you area to determine proper course of action; one can be located at www.acupuncture.com.
