Acupuncture cure a nervous tic?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
My nephew has a nervous tic (twitching of facial muscles). Is there any cure for this with traditional Chinese medicine?

A: There can be many etiologies for this condition. I would suggest you first consult with a physician to make sure there are no serious neurological problems. Symptoms like these can also be result of anxiety or some emotional distress and can also be invasion of “wind” in the facial meridians. Consult a licensed acupuncturist in your area to determine proper course of action. Acupuncture and meditation exercises can help.
