What are Nosebleeds?
A person’s nasal cavities are lined with many blood vessels that may bleed when injured or are affected by conditions such as sinus infections, allergies, excessive use of nasal sprays, environmental irritants, and even the common cold. This bleeding, more commonly known as a nosebleed, affects more than one in eight Americans. Despite this abundance, nosebleeds are of little threat to the sufferer unless they become chronic in their occurrence.
How can I treat Nosebleeds?
Traditional Chinese medicine considers nosebleeds to be a function of pathogenic heat in the blood and the spleen or liver networks that weakens the blood vessels. Treatment focuses on dispelling this heat through a balanced diet of complex carbohydrates such as buckwheat, wholesome proteins such as soy products, green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, and other foods such as celery, bamboo shoots, seaweed, bananas, honey, mung beans, sunflower seeds, cassia seeds, and lotus root. Other remedies include drinking plenty of warm or room temperature water, soaking the feet in a hot footbath for 20 minutes, and inserting a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel into the nostrils to stop the bleeding. Exercise should cease during a nosebleed, but moderate cardiovascular exercise combined with tai chi or qi gong will abate the stress that instigates nosebleeds.

Nosebleeds can be prevented by avoiding overeating, oily and greasy foods, spicy foods, coffee, alcohol, dry conditions, stress, and overexertion.
